The GRAPPLE INSTITUTES for PLC Coaches are small but intensive three-day workshops to train teacher leaders in how to effectively lead authentic PLCs. Whether participants’ schools already have PLCs, floundering PLCs, PLCs-lite, or are just beginning PLCs, this Institute is designed to help schools build and lead authentic PLCs by training the PLC leaders.
The content for the
three-day Institute is based on the highly praised book, The Practice of Authentic PLCs:
A Guide to Effective Teacher Teams, written by lead-facilitator
Daniel R. Venables. Participants
will learn how to put this content into practice with real schools and real
faculties.

"Daniel Venables has made a terrific contribution to the growing effort of teachers to educate ourselves in professional learning communities through protocols that focus our attention on the right stuff. Happily his writing is as accessible as his material is useful and his insights fresh."
—Joseph P. McDonald, Professor of Teaching and Learning at New York University and author of The Power of Protocols
Teacher leaders, PLC facilitators, academic facilitators, principals, assistant principals, teachers who are (or will be) members of PLCs, as well as district Curriculum & Instruction folks should attend.

• understand and explore Three Essential Tasks in which authentic
PLCs are continually engaged;
• understand how these Three Essential Tasks are done well;
• learn how to identify, address, and
mitigate obstacles that are common
• learn how to deal with challenging
interpersonal dynamics of PLCs
• self-evaluate their school’s PLCs using
the High-Functioning PLC Continuum
• gain a clear sense of what they need to
do next in their schools
What is
the format of the three days?
We don’t like to do powerpoints. Though some portion of each day will necessarily cover important information that will need to be shared, most of the three days will be spent in “homebase” groups that mimic real PLCs, grappling with the content and issues as an authentic PLC might do. All participants will be passed the coach’s role in their homebase PLCs and gain experience leading protocols and giving and receiving feedback. Many of the activities participants will experience will be suitable to “reproduce” with their home school PLCs.
Who are the facilitators?

Daniel R. Venables
The lead facilitator for the Institute is Daniel R. Venables, the author of The Practice of Authentic PLCs, the work on which the Institute is based. He is Executive Director for the Center for Authentic PLCs. He oversees everything related to this Institute; most importantly, the content for the three-day training. You can read more about Daniel’s background and experience here.

Cari P. Begin
Cari is the Institute Director and consultant for the Center for Authentic PLCs. She is a top-notch presenter and facilitator who knows how to build authentic PLCs in every aspect. As Institute Director, she’s also there to help with any and all logistics of the Institute. You can read more about Cari’s background and experience here.
What preparation will participants need to do before the institute?
Participants should obtain a copy of The Practice of
Authentic PLCs soon after they register. This is the bedrock text for the Institute; therefore, it is
essential that participants do some pre-reading before the Institute
begins. Ideally, participants
would have read the entire book before attending, and we are hopeful that many
will have. But we’re realists and
we fully realize that this may not be feasible for all participants for a
variety of reasons. So, we’ll let
you know which essential parts of The
Practice of Authentic PLCs must be read before coming.
In addition to
pre-reading, it is essential for each participant to take an online survey that
will provide our team of facilitators vital information about where
participants and their schools are presently in terms of PLCs.
